Solar plexus chakra, or 3rd chakra: in Sanskrit Manipura

The solar plexus chakra resonates with the color yellow and is the third main chakra at the outgoing thoracic arches, in the middle of the upper abdomen, just below the solar plexus. It resonates with the emotional and mental body and processes information from those levels of experience. Its element is fire.

Because of its location, it is also called the navel chakra. Translated from Sanskrit, Manipura means place of jewelry, Mani = pearl, Pura = place, city. These gems can be interpreted metaphorically as the properties of the chakra: They are clarity, wisdom, confidence and well-being.

The themes of the solar plexus chakra are:

Mind, thoughts, beliefs, personality, self-confidence, will, power, action, control, inner identities, lower mind and intellect, subconscious.

Chakra: A Brief Reminder

We find the concept and study of the chakras in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions and consequently in the practice of yoga, t24>ayurveda and reiki.

The chakras are energy centers or centers of consciousness. They can be compared to mini vortices in perpetual movement. Chakras are focal points of energy that have a direct, immediate and profound effect on our daily lives. The particular chakra where the majority of your kundalini energy is primarily focused - or polarized - influences your basic behavior and attitudes.

This relationship between behavior and your dominant chakra is essential because the energy acts like a magnet. We are constantly attracting vibrations to us that are on the same wavelength as the chakras from which we function.

Kundalini Yoga, introduced and taught in the West by Yogi Bhajan, allows kundalini energy to rise, balancing and coordinating all chakras .

Ayurvedic medicine uses chakras to cure illnesses, physical or mental, by diagnosing the state and functioning of one chakra in relation to others. To become an accomplished being and live a harmonious life, it is essential to harmonize and align your chakras.

Solar plexus chakra: meaning and function

mani = jewel, jewel

pura = place, town

The Manipura Chakra is located in the middle of the abdomen, behind the navel, hence its nickname, “Navel Center”. Its zone of influence radiates about 7 cm above and below the navel. Its counterpart in the body is the solar plexus. Its Mantra is RAM, (note: mi). The moment consciousness reaches the 3rd Chakra, the negative aspects of Svadhishthana are overcome. The plexus chakra offers clarity, assurance, knowledge, wisdom, self-confidence, bliss and good vision for good decisions.

Yellow is his color, the ram his animal and fire, the element with which he is associated. It is also called "solar center" or "fire center". The fire element manifests in the body by heating the solar plexus. Manipura is the center of vitality. It manages our energy balance with the mission of strengthening and solidifying our health. It is through it that "Prana", "subtle or Cosmic energy" is extracted from food to be diffused in our bodies

Manipura chakra governs and harmonizes the functions of the pancreas and the organs of the digestive system. Blockages of this energy center are often the cause of health problems: disturbed digestive system, blood circulation problems, diabetes, irregular blood pressure.

An open and fully functional Solar Plexus Chakra helps us avoid many diseases. The freely flowing energy allows it to provide balance and strength, and to be a sure and inexhaustible source of vitality.

The symbol of a ten-petalled lotus flower represents Manipura. They evoke the ten "Prana", vital forces which govern all the functions of the human body. The symbolism of the inverted triangle, the tip pointing downwards, refers to the expansion of energy, growth and development. The active solar chakra transmutes heavy and negative energies and invigorates vitality.

The Deities associated with this Chakra are Vishnu and Lakshmi. The God Vishnu symbolizes the evolution of human consciousness having detached itself from animal energies. Goddess Lakshmi symbolizes material and spiritual abundance.

The Manipūra chakra is the "City of Jewels" where clarity, wisdom, self-confidence and well-being reign. It radiates to the lower chakras and up to the heart chakra (Anāhata Chakra). The feelings of love and happiness that we feel in our heart actually originate from the Manipūra chakra and rise from there to the Anāhata chakra. The positive radiance emanating from the Manipūra chakra also purifies the Svādhishthāna and Mūlādhāra chakras and their qualities.

Passion becomes pure selfless love; in the light of wisdom, prejudice and aversion, it turns into respect and understanding; envy and insatiable greed are transformed into goodwill and wholesome moderation. As self-confidence grows, pride and jealousy turn into modesty and generosity, ignorance turns into clarity, and laziness turns into purposeful and consistent effort.

It is associated with the element fire, which means light, heat, energy and activity, but also power and force. It is the epicenter of our energy and represents the development of the "I", as well as the power of affirmation in one's own environment. It's not about asserting yourself by force, but about finding a harmonious way to realize your own ideas.

Blockages in this chakra express themselves physically in digestive disorders, stomach problems, diabetes and overweight. Mentally, the blockage is expressed by aggression, insecurity, sleep disturbances and nightmares.

The seat of words is in the Manipūra chakra. To illustrate this with a concrete vibratory experience: Place your thumb on your navel and say a word aloud. You will notice that you feel the sound vibration first in the navel before it is discernible on your lips. The sound begins in the navel, rises to the larynx and manifests as sound from the lips. Exercises that strengthen and harmonize the Manipūra chakra are therefore also beneficial for all types of speech disorders.

The Bīja mantra of the Manipūra chakra is RAM. This sound has developed from the vibration caused by the meeting of the Nādīs in this centre. If we chant RAM for a while and specifically let the "R" vibrate, we become aware of a pleasant feeling of warmth and the flow of energy.

By chanting this mantra you are aligning your navel chakra and therefore also your sense of identity, your self-confidence, your identity and your self-awareness This is where your balance, your stability, your strength and your activity.

Function of the solar chakra

The important role of the solar plexus chakra

Manipūra is called solar plexus chakra, navel chakra, navel center, cspleen hakra, stomach chakra, 3rd chakra or yellow chakra.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is the seat of our personality and the conscious shaping of our life, influence and power. Here the vital impulses and desires of the lower chakras are processed and transformed, and the feelings and experiences are integrated into the overall personality. We experience warmth, power and wholeness, harmony with ourselves and with life, when our third chakra is functioning harmoniously

The theme, the learning task of the Solar Plexus Chakra is the development of personality, the processing of feelings and experiences, the formation of being, influence and power , strength and abundance and the wisdom that grows from experience.

On a physical level, the 3rd chakra is primarily associated with digestion and metabolism. Manipura controls our energy level and also supplies the digestive organs with energy. Its fire element manifests in the body as heat and ignites or regulates the digestive fire, Agni, bringing energy to the liver, spleen, pancreas and stomach.

This wheel of energy is closely related to the psyche. Mental problems often give rise to digestive problems. For example, many people react to fear or stressful situations with abdominal pain, diarrhea, or gasping. At negative emotions or strong emotional disturbances they feel a stab in the sternum.

The Manipura chakra is attributed with the meaning of sight, also in a figurative sense (a good view of things and which direction to take).

A blocked navel chakra or imbalanced will destroy our energy and cause various physical and psychological problems. We are no longer able to think clearly, we cannot express our thoughts and feelings clearly. It produces the fear of not being loved, of being a failure, of getting sick, of dying, etc. Many of our fears are produced by blockages in the Manipūra chakra.

The Tattva (element) of the Manipūra chakra is TEJAS (fire), hence its other names of "Fire Center" or the Sun The Fire element manifests within the body as body heat . The Manipūra Chakra controls our energy balance and supplies energy to the digestive organs. When it feeds and regulates the "digestive fire" (vegetative nervous system, digestive system: stomach, liver, spleen and bile), it also contributes significantly to a stable and healthy constitution.

The Manipūra chakra is also described as the "cosmic doorway" as it provides access to many astral powers. It is the center of HARA, a power center or "Lion Center" which gives us balance, stability, strength and activity. It functions as an energy transformer that converts and supplies the body with subtle cosmic energy (Prāna) which is absorbed with our food.

Benefits of an Open Navel Chakra

Benefits of a balanced solar chakra

High level of energy and vitality, self-confidence, achievement of goals, drive, strong personality, power in a positive sense accompanied by sensitivity and compassion, intuitive decisions (coming from the gut), feelings can be accepted and experienced, good nerves, good sleep.

A person with a developed solar plexus chakra has the energy and natural aggressiveness to achieve their own goals.

A person whose solar plexus chakra is completely open is an adult personality. He has integrated the experiences of his life, the "inner child" and the "inner adolescent" and lives in a healthy demarcation from his environment. He has a healthy self-esteem, knows his strengths and weaknesses, is capable of reflection and self-discipline. He is aware of the restrictive and subconscious nature of beliefs and thought patterns and lives as a mature person. He learned to educate himself and to defend his own opinion, even if he is alone in doing so. He loves challenges and is able to achieve his goals despite resistance and obstacles. He has realistic ideas about his abilities and impact power. He can take responsibility and has a high degree of integrity. He succeeds in harmoniously combining intellect and emotions, he is rarely overwhelmed by his feelings or gets lost in them, because an enriching reflection of them is possible. Thoughts do not remain a detached intellectual thread, but take root emotionally, fertilize themselves and can thus be implemented in a tangible way. His fellow men perceive him as a being rested in his midst and endowed with strong nerves. Even in stressful situations, he is focused, calm and balanced.

He is a person who rests in his center and has a stable effect on his environment. This energetic being makes decisions and takes responsibility. He reacts with sensitivity and follows his intuition in his decisions.

He has a deep sense of security as a person. He is able to make decisions, even in difficult situations and under pressure. He radiates a natural strength and does not give his power to others, he cannot be manipulated. The full development of his personality made him grow - he found his place in life.

These people are also very sensitive and open to other people's problems.Medically predisposed people, can enhance their telepathic abilities here, they have what is called X-ray vision

Signs of an open plexus chakra:

By activating your navel chakra, you gain "serenity even in adverse circumstances" ("Light on Pranayama" by B.K.S. Iyengar). When your navel chakra is in balance, you will feel good about yourself and powerful. You have good self-confidence and know why you are here. It also helps you become independent of status symbols.

Passion becomes self-love, prejudice and aversion turn into respect and understanding, envy and avarice turn into goodwill and healthy restraint. With the increase in self-confidence, pride and jealousy turn into generosity and modesty. Ignorance turns into clarity, and laziness turns into focused, consistent effort.

Signs of balance: Confident, motivated, determined, reliable, responsible

When the solar plexus chakra is in balance, a person exudes confidence (without being arrogant), feels motivated, and has a sense of purpose.

Impacts of Blocked 3rd Chakra and Signs of Imbalance

3th Chakra blocked

Manipura is the source of strength and self-confidence, fighting energy and holds the power of transformation. If you feel confident, determined and motivated, your third chakra is open and in balance. When blocked, the opposite happens. Your self-confidence is low, you may have trouble making decisions, or you may have trouble containing your anger and maintaining control.

If there are areas of your life where you feel helpless, where you suffer from over-correction or pressure to control, a third chakra imbalance may also be the cause. It can also encourage victimization or manifest as dependency and low self-confidence. Fear of not being loved or disappointed or fear of illness or death can also indicate a blocked third chakra.

The solar plexus chakra is responsible for the emotional and mental processing of experiences. If we are overwhelmed by negative thoughts or mental energies, or if our sense of agency, worth as a person, abilities, and self-esteem has not been brought forth, a blockage in the chakra of the solar plexus can occur.

Fear of failure and fear of withdrawal of love and criticism, especially the overload of experiences we cannot digest, often lead to blockages in this chakra. Psychic attacks through mental projections and mental influence are also directed against this chakra.

When we give our doubts and weaknesses, anger and envy to our Manipura Chakra, it burns them to ashes. When you work with the third chakra, you cultivate insight into your power, your individuality, and also your identification.

Psychic effects of a blockage in the solar plexus chakra

A blocked and weak solar plexus chakra mostly manifests in extremes and often in excessive demands, despair, fear and anger. The affected person takes life through a filter of helplessness and/or worthlessness. She feels overwhelmed by life's challenges and is extremely emotionally unstable

Helplessness can manifest itself as, among other things, anger, apathy, depression, hopelessness, self-hatred, mania for control and loss of boundaries. But also as a distorted will to power that does not fear manipulation, deception and intrigue.

Those affected are often unwilling and impressionable on a deep level and suffer from control mania or let go completely. Triggered by their weakness of will, their opportunism is pronounced, they unconsciously subordinate themselves to the wishes and ideas of others, only to vent their frustration at the disregard for their needs and limitations in the next moment, possibly in a fit with rage.

They are prone to victimization, envy, bitterness and addictions. They quickly feel neglected and ignore themselves for fear of not being liked. The loss of self-esteem through negative beliefs about oneself can go as far as self-hatred.

A blocked solar plexus chakra leads to experiences and feelings that cannot be digested in a healthy way, one feels overwhelmed by them, one believes that one does not measure up. Those affected therefore often suppress their overwhelming feelings and tend to uncontrolled emotional outbursts. Often they project their own negative feelings, which they have not experienced, onto their comrades and partners or onto life - the circumstances are apparently "too much". It's not uncommon for them to be perceived as either angry or completely cold and emotionally indifferent, because they're constantly trying to maintain control.

The non-aggressive variant isn't actually free of anger or rage - these feelings are simply muted and directed inward. The consequences can be not only health problems, but also interpersonal tensions, which can manifest themselves in sudden outbursts of anger. It is likely that a person with this blocked chakra projects the "domestic" aggressions into the environment and draws feelings of fear and paranoia from it.

A blocked solar plexus chakra suppresses the expression of emotions and feelings, and attempts to control and rationalize them in order to somehow subdue them.

Signs of a blocked solar plexus chakra:

Low vital energy, emotional coldness, indifference, insecurity, lack of self-confidence, obsession with power, exaggerated ambition and pursuit of performance, ruthlessness, tantrums, eating disorders, sleeping disorders, inability to achieve one's goals, insecurity, blocked feelings, stomach disease, heartburn, liver disease, spleen + gallbladder, jaundice, digestive disorders, pain in the lumbar spine, nerve disease, diabetes mellitus, overweight

An imbalance or blockage in the Manipūra Chakra paralyzes and destroys our energy and triggers various physical and psychic problems. If we are unable to think clearly, to express our thoughts and feelings, or if our mind is foggy, there is often a disturbance in the Manipūra Chakra.

General signs of imbalance: Aggressiveness, excessive domination towards others, low self-esteem

When out of balance, a person may suffer from low self-esteem, have difficulty making decisions, and have control issues.

Solar plexus imbalances can also manifest in the physical body, such as fatigue, overeating, excess weight around the stomach, and digestive system disorders such as ulcers, hypoglycemia, and diabetes

Physical signs indicating a blocked Manipura chakra:

On a physical level, the function of the third chakra can be compared to that of a fireplace. When wood is added, the flames become large and flaming. When the wood is almost burnt, only the embers remain. It acts as an energy transformer, supplying the body with prana that has been absorbed through food. A poor diet therefore has a long-term negative effect on your navel chakra.

If your 3th chakra is out of balance, it can lead to digestive issues:

  • Eating disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Bad skin condition
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Arthritis
  • Rheumatic complaints
  • Migraines
  • Allergies
  • Liver, intestine or stomach problems.

It can also be the cause of diarrhoea, headaches, lack of energy or anxiety.

On the other hand, a balanced Manipura chakra still provides us with energy even if we have eaten or slept little. For this reason, the third chakra is one of the most important energy centers for physical well-being. Strengthen your Agni digestive fire. With a healthy Agni, you help your third chakra stay open and in balance.
