Symbol AUM - OM - OHM
OM: A sacred syllable, the AUM is a "seed mantra". It is the origin of all the other mantras (a mantra is a word or group of words that is repeated or sung). It is considered the most important of the mantras.
This sound could be heard in perfect and total silence.
It is a sound "beyond sound", like white light, in which all the colors of the rainbow originate.
It is the first Sound that the baby, who is born, utters.
This vibration represents the universal sound of all creation. This vibration is at the origin of all other sound, of all language. It encompasses in its vibration the totality of what exists.
It is the symbol of the absolute and infinite universe, of the past, present and future. The whole universe is created in this one Sound, rests there for a time, then merges again into the vibration.
The three letters A,U,M represent the combination of the 3 energies that make up the cycle of life.
Each letter has a specific meaning:
The letter "A" represents Brahman, the creator god. It is the earthly world, the creation, the beginning, the birth.
The letter "U" represents Vishnu, the patron god. It is the intermediate world, the dream, the continuation, the life.
The letter "M" stands for Shiva, the Destroyer. It is centrifugal force, sleep, the end, death. "M" is the state of deep sleep, the celestial world.
This cycle is repeated ad infinitum: everything is born, lives for a time, then dies and returns to merge into the universe, the great All.
The AUM is the representation of the 3 phases of the life.
Shanti means Peace. Peace in body, speech and mind (our whole being)
"Om Shanti" means peace for all living and non-living beings, peace for the universe.
